Information Sheet for Prospective Members

Steps to Membership
  • Secure a sponsor
  • Complete a membership application
  • The sponsor recommends your membership application to the club
  • The application will be processed according to the rules currently in place with the PAYC.
General Information The Port Alberni Yacht Club is a family orientated society with membership open to the public on a space available basis. Some restrictions apply to boaters from outside the Alberni Clayoquot area. The procedure for joining includes steps to safeguard your interests as well as those of current members. The Port Alberni Yacht Club wants applicants to  have sufficient information to make an informed decision when completing an application form. You need to know the responsibility each member accepts for ongoing maintenance of club facilities and procedures that have been developed for their communal use. Please go to the tab Spring Opening to learn more about maintenance at the club.

Our experience has been that prospective members who spend some time at our Barkley Sound facility getting to know members and club procedures are better able to decide whether or not they wish to make the commitment of time and money that membership entails. And, because prospective members must be sponsored by an active member who can speak on their behalf, prospective members are asked to spend one boating season at our visitors' dock while getting to know club members.

If you would like to know about club membership, please communicate your interest to a member and ask for an introduction to the Commodore or a member of the Executive Committee. Introduction of new members is normally at our Annual General Meeting in October.

In summary if you wish to know more about membership in the Port Alberni Yacht Club, you should:
  • Talk to a friend, who is a current member, who could sponsor you.
  • Or, introduce yourself to members on the dock and ask about club activities.
  • Ask for an introduction to the Commodore or an Executive Committee member
  • Ask for and complete a membership application form including a sponsor's name. This application form is available through your sponsor, from the club secretary and is downloadable.
Note It is the responsibility of a member who acts as a sponsor to see that prospective members are made to feel welcome during their period of initiation. They should make introductions to current members and offer invitations to participate in club activities. If you do become a member, they are responsible to see that you are fully informed about membership responsibilities. The ongoing success of this organisation is dependent on the co-operation of its members. As a member of the Port Alberni Yacht Club, you would be expected to demonstrate this spirit of co-operation and mutual respect.

Thank you for your interest in the Port Alberni Yacht Club.
